We increasingly encounter autonomous systems that act less like tools and more like counterparts—not just responding to commands, but exhibiting behavior, learning, and adapting. How do we design these hybrid things when they are no longer passive objects but active participants? Instead of mimicking human traits, can we explore new interaction paradigms beyond anthropomorphic assumptions?
In our talk at the digital.werk symposium, we presented research from the Hybrid Things Lab, showcasing speculative design approaches, experimental prototypes, and interdisciplinary perspectives on robotic presence, agency, and interaction design.
In addition to our talk, we are contributing a written article to the upcoming digital.werk publication on the role of digitalization in architecture, design, craft, and interdisciplinary interfaces. The open-access book features reflections from symposium speakers, offering deeper insights into their work.
The digital.werk symposium explored the intersection of digital technology, design, and human experience—bridging research, craft, and innovation.
A big thank you to Johannes Braumann and Martin Schwab from Creative Robotics for organizing this inspiring event and bringing together such a diverse and engaging group of researchers and practitioners.
